Policymakers, managers, and the media frequently speak about trust and distrust, yet trust is one of the most fundamentally misunderstood concepts in management and in society.

Building on the research conducted by GEM's Chair for Public Trust in Health, this presentation will show the basic mechanisms of individual and collective trust and discuss how the specificities of a sector – in this case, the health sector – lead to very specific trust issues.

Charles-Clemens Rüling is the Associate Dean for Research and a member of GEM's Executive Committee. He has been a professor of organization theory at GEM since 2002 and studies institutional change processes, social acceptance of technology, and collective trust, with a particular focus on the health sector. He is also the coordinator of the Research Chair for Public Trust in Health, supported by the GEM Foundation in partnership with Bristol-Myers Squibb France.
